1. What were your favorite discoveries or excursions on this learning journey?
Love the SKYPE Island....I got an answer back from an author about a SKYPE visit...it won’t be free but maybe more affordable to my students won’t have to miss out on an author visit this year!
2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
We all know that as soon as you are informed about a new piece or source of technology that is has probably already changed...so being a lifelong learner is what information specialist like me are...if we aren’t learning something new then we are not doing our jobs.
3. Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
Great job Michelle! I do feel like the quantity of the course (time it takes to navigate through the islands) more closely matches the credit earned.
4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
The format is FANTASTIC!!! You made navigating so easy and moving back and forth to different options was a breeze!!! Must have been those “sea breezes”.

Excursion Island
What do you see as the most important emerging technology that will influence schools?
I limited my view of the report to the “Relevance of Teaching, Learning, Research, or Creative Inquiry” and will comment on that aspect of the report. I am a recent (past 8 years) graduate school student with the majority of my coursework done online so I have the insight of the digital world from that aspect.
What I look forward to in the future is research for the novice reader using electronic devices. This research may create a new field of study as it will require pyschology, educators, and digital experts to find the impact and possibilities that are going to be available to children. I look forward to seeing just “how much” a child can learn when barriers to learning are diminished by using digital technologies. However, in the public education equality for all learners will probably be a stalemate in the progression.
Take some day trips into the Web 2.0 websites. Choose one to really explore. Why did you choose that one?
Be careful....this site is addicting! Chose it because it has so many resources on this one site.

What turned you off to the others?
Schoopy looks to be similar to the online lesson planning tool we currently use. I do see some room for interfacing many other resources that would make productivity greater for educators. Hint..hint...Monty/Bryan and Nancy!
What are some of the Web 2.0 tools that you will try next year and why?
GahooYoogle-great way to “multi-search” (i.e. multi-task)...I think I just created a new Web 2.0 term!

We complain about digital storage space, bandwidth, etc. SlideShare would help with those issues and make collaboration and presentations so much easier. Just have to avoid those advertisements some how.

SEARCH Island
For your post on Search Island review all the different tools in this kit.
Which ones are you going to pick up and put in your bucket? (Use in your classroom or library?) Why?
I already use a number of these search tools as a librarian. I have had podcasting as a goal for 2 years now and not had the time or resources to create a podcast...so I will set it as a goal again this year. With this in mind I will use the podcasting search tool in order to get ideas for my own podcast.
blinx was fun too! Will use this in the same manner for podcasting.

SKYPE ISLAND
What is the one thing that spoke to you? The one thing that made you say,"Man I gotta try that?"
The “thing” that appealed to me was the fact that SKYPE is in “real time”. What a fantastic source for our students to view and talk with people all over the world. I have timed a couple of “SKYPE” sessions with friends in Korea. They are about 12 hours ahead of us so timing is a small issue that is overcome when both parties are willing to compromise about working beyond the school day.
Our budgets are dwindling so rapidly that I thought I would no longer be able to fund author visits. Well...SKYPE Authors just solved this! I plan on contacting an author for a SKYPE visit this fall or spring. I am SO EXCITED about being able to provide this service to my students on my shoe-string budget!!!

While the setting of my library program is elementary I believe it is one of my responsibilities to know the needs of the students at the next level. The cross grade level information ensures that I provide the foundation necessary for students to be successful once they leave my program. This is often a challenge for me as time and resources are not always right at hand. With this in mind I “sailed” the seas of the VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) to locate content that was applicable to my needs. The homepage link to “This Week’s Reviews” is very useful for collection development. This gives me a quick look at what students may find interesting at the next level and therefore an idea of where my patrons are headed. Check out the “Hot Topics” for yet another method of collection development!

How do you feel about the teachers you saw in the video?
The teachers are a good example of the spectrum of roles the library program plays in a child’s education.
Do you agree that this is what teaching and learning is becoming?
I agree our “digital natives” are defined by the Web 2.0 technologies they have access to. We, as their educators, are required to meet their technological needs. We must be their digital tour guides as we cannot expect them to step backwards into the world that existed before the digital age.
How does this affect you in your classroom and how can you incorporate these things into your teaching?
We incorporate so many of these skills in the library program...research, collecting data, discerning authoritative sources, etc.
Of all the verbs you saw in the video which one do you best identify with.
Since I have to choose (which really the library program can be described by all of these verbs)...”integrate” would be my choice as the library program integrates the skills taught in the classroom and makes it possible for the classroom to integrate more skills at a higher level because of what we teach in the library program.

Week 9
1. What did you like? What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
Love Google Maps and Google Earth. I am trying to extend the library program into other curriculum areas and this is such an easy way for me to combine those technology skills into the social studies TEKS.
2. What was your least favorite thing that you discovered?
Well it is me and technology..so there isn’t anything I didn’t like. I love “playing with technology”. My only regret is there is not enough time in the day to do everything I saw.
