Thing #18

I can see that Open Office offers some advantages...FREE being the most obvious. Navigating and using it is fairly straight forward and easy. The ability to save in many formats and have the product read a variety of formats is a definite advantage.

Disadvantage...I do question why one would want to use an web based product when a suite such as Microsoft Office already exists and provides 24/7 access while the web based version may not be always accessible.

I will be curious to see if Open Office will start to give other products a run for their money and charge for future upgraded versions.

  1. I can not speak to Open Office except to say, MS products can be pricey and some schools are finding that open source is a way to save on costs of adding technology.

The use of Googledocs means it doesn't matter what computer you are using ..you can always get the document and work! And group work is much simpler...no emailing files and getting mixed up on which one is the latest copy!

  2. While I respect your opinion my experience with MS products is that when purchased in quantity (or computers are purchased in quantity) the software is very negotiable...we got it for "free" (of course realizing nothing is free" when we recently purchased a large number of units. We also got the rights to have it downloaded by our employees on 1 personal computer.
I think I am also resistant to change unless it is a true upgrade or makes my life easier... I don't feel Open Office is enough of either of those for me to make the move at this time. Thanks for commenting...nice to hear others' opinions.
